WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?

The deadline for the current award cycle is April 14, 2024 at 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time (New York, NY). The deadline will not be extended. It is highly recommended to submit before this deadline to avoid any technical difficulties in uploading your proposal and photographs.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THE FILM PHOTO AWARD?

The Film Photo Award is open to all emerging, established, and student photographers based in the United States, 18 years of age or older. Recipients of the Film Photo Award are ineligible to receive another film award for three years.

CAN I MIX AND MATCH MY AWARDED FILM WITH MULTIPLE FILM EMULSIONS AND FILM FORMATS?

No, each applicant will select to receive a single film format and emulsion that will best fit their needs for the project they are proposing.

MAY I MAIL IN ANYTHING TO SUPPLEMENT MY APPLICATION?

No physical application materials can be received or reviewed at this time. All materials must be submitted through the online portal and follow the guidelines to be considered.

AM I CONSIDERED A STUDENT?

Anyone 18 years old or older and currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an institution of higher education at the time of submission is eligible for the Student Project Award. You do not need to be studying photography specifically. Uploading verification of current student status will be required.

CAN I SUBMIT AS PART OF A COLLABORATIVE TEAM?

Yes, your collaborators must be listed in your proposal.

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE SEQUENCE OF MY SUBMITTED IMAGES?

To organize image files in a specific order use the sequence number at the end of the file name as described in the Award Submission Guidelines.

File naming and numbering needs to be done before uploading.
(Ex: Doe_Jane_01.jpg, Doe_Jane_02.jpg, Doe_Jane_03.jpg).

MAY I SUBMIT TWO OR MORE BODIES OF WORK AS EXAMPLES OF PAST WORK?

Yes, you will just need to explain these different bodies of work within the proposal and/or image information section of the submission platform.

MAY I APPLY WITH THE SAME PROPOSAL AND/OR IMAGES I SUBMITTED DURING A PREVIOUS AWARD PERIOD?

Yes.

MAY I PROPOSE MORE THAN ONE PROJECT?

Applicants may submit more than one project proposal, however each proposal must be a separate submission.

MAY I SUBMIT VIDEOS AS PART OF MY APPLICATION?

No, the Film Photo Award is only accepting still image jpegs at this time.

WHERE DO I PROCESS MY FILM?

Griffin Editions in New York City will process your awarded film for free during your 1 year award period. Any additional services and shipping of film to and from the Griffin Editions lab is the responsibility of the photographer. Only film awarded through the FPA will be processed for free with Griffin Editions.

DOES A PROJECT THAT SPANS MANY YEARS STILL QUALIFY AS RECENT WORK?

A project that is still actively being worked on is considered recent work. The photographs submitted should be from within the last 5 years.

IS INSTALLATION-BASED, FOUND IMAGERY, OR MIXED MEDIA WORK ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT TO THE FILM PHOTO AWARD?

Yes, any work that uses still photography is eligible for entry. You will need to explain in your proposal how this film award will be necessary for your project.

HOW WILL THE IMAGES IN MY APPLICATION BE VIEWED?

The images will be viewed on screen, one at a time, in the order they are submitted.

MY WORK CONSISTS OF DIPTYCHS, TRIPTYCHS, OR MORE COMBINATIONS OF IMAGES. HOW SHOULD I SUBMIT MY IMAGES?

Submit diptychs, triptychs, or other multiples as one image file, so that all pieces of the work can be viewed at the same time.

WHAT FORMAT SHOULD I SAVE MY DIGITAL FILES?

You should submit JPEG images with 1200 pixels on the long dimension at 72 ppi.

HOW WILL I FIND OUT IF I RECEIVED A FILM PHOTO AWARD?

All applicants will be notified through the email provided in the application form as to the results of the award jurying process. Recipients of the award will be posted on the Film Photo Award webpage. All results of the jurying process are final and individual feedback is not possible at this time.

HOW AND WHEN WILL I RECEIVE THE REQUESTED FILM IF I AM SELECTED FOR AN AWARD?

Requested film will be shipped within 4-6 weeks of award announcements to the address provided in the application form. Should a requested film stock not be available, alternative arrangements will be made with the recipient via email.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PHOTOGRAPHS I SUBMIT?

Photographs submitted to the Film Photo Award may be used by the Film Photo Award or its sponsors for the purpose of promoting the award. You retain copyright to your photographs.
